3D Depth Cameras in Vision: Benefits and Limitations of the Hardware With an Emphasis on the First- and Second-Generation Kinect Models

چکیده
The second-generation Microsoft Kinect uses time-of-flight technology, while the first-generation Kinect uses structured light technology. This raises the question whether one of these technologies is “better” than the other. In this chapter, readers will find an overview of 3D camera technology and the artifacts that occur in depth maps.

Camera Arrangement in Visual 3D Systems using Iso-disparity Model to Enhance Depth Estimation Accuracy
In this paper we address the problem of automatic arrangement of cameras in a 3D system to enhance the performance of depth acquisition procedure. Lacking ground truth or a priori information, a measure of uncertainty is required to assess the quality of reconstruction. The mathematical model of iso-disparity surfaces provides an efficient way to estimate the depth estimation uncertainty which ...
متن کاملPlanelet Transform: A New Geometrical Wavelet for Compression of Kinect-like Depth Images
With the advent of cheap indoor RGB-D sensors, proper representation of piecewise planar depth images is crucial toward an effective compression method. Although there exist geometrical wavelets for optimal representation of piecewise constant and piecewise linear images (i.e. wedgelets and platelets), an adaptation to piecewise linear fractional functions which correspond to depth variation ov...
متن کاملEnhanced personal autostereoscopic telepresence system using commodity depth cameras
This paper describes an enhanced telepresence system that offers fully dynamic, real-time 3D scene capture and continuousviewpoint, head-tracked stereo 3D display without requiring the user to wear any tracking or viewing apparatus. We present a complete software and hardware framework for implementing the system, which is based on an array of commodity Microsoft KinectTMcolor-plus-depth camera...
متن کاملPersian sign language detection based on normalized depth image information
There are many reports of using the Kinect to detect hand and finger gestures after release of device by Microsoft. The depth information is mostly used to separate the hand image in the two-dimension of RGB domain. This paper proposes a method in which the depth information plays a more dominant role. Using a threshold in depth space first the hand template is extracted. Then in 3D domain the ...
متن کاملAssessment and Calibration of a RGB-D Camera (Kinect v2 Sensor) Towards a Potential Use for Close-Range 3D Modeling
In the last decade, RGB-D cameras also called range imaging cameras have known a permanent evolution. Because of their limited cost and their ability to measure distances at a high frame rate, such sensors are especially appreciated for applications in robotics or computer vision. The Kinect v1 (Microsoft) release in November 2010 promoted the use of RGB-D cameras, so that a second version of t...
